Dal 1953 venne trasferito ed esposto nella Cappella dei Seminaristi di Villacidro fino al 1977, perché si evitasse un suo eventuale danneggiamento durante l’esecuzione di lavori all’interno della chiesa di San Michele. Nel 1982 venne sottoposto ad un terzo restauro nel laboratorio di Duilio Tanchis. Il retablo del Cavaro è una gran tavola d’altare che si compone di tre parti superiori, verticali, fra le quali quella centrale è più alta, separate da pilastrini di legno, ciascuna divisa in due settori, e di due parti orizzontali divise in tre settori ciascuna e separate dal tabernacolo, costituenti la predella.

Ai piedi della Madonna sotto il manto, è presente l’iscrizione vergata, su tre righe in carattere gotico minuscolo, l’autore, l’anno, il mese e il giorno di realizzazione come segue: “En any MDI es estada feta lò dit retaul per ma(n)s de mestre Lore(n)s Cavaro de Stampas feta a XV de dese(m)ber any de sus dit”.

LORENZO CAVARO’S ALTARPIECE
From 1953 till 1977, Lorenzo Cavaro’s altarpiece was transferred and placed on show in the Chapel of the Seminarists of Villacidro, in order to avoid any possible damage during the execution of the renovation work inside the church of Saint Michael. In 1982 it underwent a third restoration in the lab of Duilio Tanchis. Cavaro’s altarpiece  is a large retable, made by three vertical upper parts, between which the central one is higher, separated by wooden pillars, each vertical part is divided into two sectors, and two horizontal parts divided into three sectors each and separated by the tabernacle, constituting the predella.

At the feet of the Virgin Mary and under the cloak, there is an inscription in lowercase gothic font along three rows, which includes the author, the year and the day in which it was created; it reads: “En any MDI es estada feta lò dit retaul per ma(n)s de mestre Lore(n)s Cavaro de Stampas feta a XV de dese(m)ber any de sus dit”.
